Intermission: Ghost Town

Ghost Town Ruby Arizona - Letus Extreme Film from Tom Guilmette on Vimeo.
Another film from Tom out in Arizona. Some great colors and shots here.

Time is Flying by

Well, April is almost here. Spring is in the air, the days are getting longer as well as warmer and soon it will be summer. Where does the time go? It's funny how when we are young it seems to move so slowly and we can't wait to get old enough to go somewhere on our own or drive or whatever. Now, I am trying to find ways to slow it all down, just a bit.
I'm off work today and going to be working on my school work which is going fairly well. I've got a deadline to meet so I need to pick up the pace there. Anyway, Hope your day is good, where ever you may be.

Kickin it at the Atlanta Starbucks

Yes, taking a bit of a break at the Starbucks I came across. If I could have found an indy coffee shop, I'd have went there. Heck of a drive early this morning. Lots of rain and there were a couple of thunderstorms this afternoon. Overall, it's been a fine day and a nice quick trip.

Moonlit

Ok, this isn't my pic. I follow another blog by a guy living in Japan and he took this pic of the Cherry Blossoms at night and I thought it was beautiful. So, thanks to Jake for the photo.

Hanging at the Laundry

Man, wifi is just everywhere, isn't it. I was very surprised to discover wifi here at the laundry on Stratford Rd. Makes doing the spring cleaning a little more bearable.
Just sitting here pondering my options that I have in my life. They have suddenly become many and more dramatic than ever before.

Yeah, Like I Said

It's been one hell of a week for me. I mean that in a good way.

Interesting Week

Yes, it's been an interesting week so far. Looks to be even more interesting as the week goes on. Being a bit cryptic, but that's just the way it is.

A Beautiful Day with Dinner at Whole Foods

Phew! Went walking around Salem Lake today. Almost no one else there. Nice and quiet and very pretty out. Almost a perfect day. Got home and realized I had not even eaten lunch, so here I am at Whole Foods grabbing some groceries and getting something to eat. A wonderful day!

Russian Relations

Is there a new Cold War coming?

Russia: US, NATO actions mean new arms are needed

MOSCOW — Russia's defense minister on Tuesday accused the United States of beefing up its military presence near Russian borders and poaching for mineral wealth there, signaling that Moscow could take a tough position in upcoming talks with Barack Obama's new administration.

"U.S. aspirations have been aimed at getting access to raw materials, energy and other resources" of ex-Soviet nations, Serdyukov told military officers. "Active support was given to the processes aimed at pushing Russia out of the sphere of its traditional interests."

Moscow has fiercely opposed plans to put Ukraine and Georgia on track to NATO membership. Russian officials also hope the Obama administration will cancel plans to deploy missile defense sites in Poland and the Czech Republic. Moscow has raised the stakes by threatening to deploy missiles next to Poland if the U.S. goes ahead with the missile shield.

It's Time Again for DEVO

clipped from www.clubdevo.com
DEVO ANNOUNCE NEW STUDIO ALBUM
TO DEBUT FALL 2009!

Their First Full-Length Album Release since 1990!

De-evolution has finally arrived...
and who better to guide us through the mess than DEVO.

What the iconic new wave, art punk pioneers cautioned us about almost 30 years ago is no longer a humorous theory. It's pretty much fact--we now live in a devolved world that's getting wackier each and every day.

The fall of 2009 will bring a new DEVO studio album, their first one since 1990's Smooth Noodle Maps . It'll mark their first new music since the strong fan reaction that greeted the 2007 single “Watch Us Work It,” their first new song in 18 years and one that was produced by Sweden's TeddyBears (Robyn). They're now in the studio putting the finishing touches on their new album (title TBA).

Apple Netbook?

Hummmm..... if they can keep it under $500, I'd think about buying one.
clipped from www.gearlog.com

Remember that rumored Apple touchscreen netbook we told you about yesterday? Said rumors started flying when it was reveled that Cupertino was buying screen's from Taiwanese company, Wintek Corp. While both companies not surprisingly were silent on the matter, people were predicting the product for the third quarter of this year (July press conference, anyone?). Since then, sources have apparently been leaking like a sieve.

The Dow Jones news wire, this morning, quoted two anonymous sources about the apparently forthcoming device. According to the proposed specs, the netbook will feature a screen that measures between 9.7- and 10-inches. Another source told Dow Jones that the mini-notebook would be assembled by OEM Quanta.

Hanging at Krankies

So, here I am on a Tuesday night. I'm hanging out at Krankies, doing some school work, having a latte and listening to some interesting music. Back in Cincinnati, I used to go to a coffee shop near the U of Cincy. Friday nights were a must. Back then I would hang out and watch X-Files with a bunch of strangers on a 15" TV. It was fun. During the commercials we would talk about what was going on in the show until the commercials were over then someone would start the "shushing".
It's not like that here, but it's nice and quiet enough to do some work on an essay. Funny, until tonight, I had not realized how much I missed just hanging out somewhere. Listening, looking and not caring much about what the time is.

Saturday Morning Watchmen

Oh, the pain....

I Watched the Watchmen

I went to the first show at the Grand theater earlier today with some friends. Being a weekday, I was happy to see the theater had plenty of seats. After getting various snacks, we settled in for the movie. Awesome. The actors were very good in the roles they had and the effects were terrific. There was no way this film was going to be made even 10 years ago and make it look believable. The story was tight and the ending was good. I was very pleased by the whole thing and I look forward to the three and a half hour version on DVD.

Part of the Problem

This guy. Yes, he's part of the problem, not the solution. Really, he should just leave Washington and let Obama and the Democrats get America back on the right track.

Bush Memos: Constitution Suspended Under Plea of "Terrorism"

Specifically the 4th and 5th amendments, and Posse Comitatus, which forbids the use of military for domestic policing.

The dangerous plea of "necessity" and "war powers" was used. In other words, the Constitution was suspended (in factual actions) and America was under secret Martial Law.

Bush Lawyers Approved Constitution-Free Domestic Military Ops, Docs Show

The Justice Department secretly authorized President George Bush to use the military inside the United States to snoop on, raid and even kill citizens in order to fight terrorism without regard to the Fourth or Fifth Amendment, according to a Oct 23, 2001 memo released by the Obama Administration Monday.

the Office of Legal Counsel memo (.pdf) said. "We think that the better view is that the Fourth Amendment does not apply to domestic military operations designed to deter and prevent future terrorist attacks."
wrote the memo after the administration asked whether it could use the military inside the United States.
The memo found that the military could be deployed widely within the United States without being subject to the limits of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Those actions include using the National Security Agency to spy on communications inside the United States without getting court approval

China's Moon Probe Lands

We need to get past the moon and have a manned Mars mission.

China's lunar probe lands on moon

BEIJING, China (CNN) -- China's first lunar probe landed on the moon in a controlled collision Sunday, marking the first phase of the nation's three-stage moon mission, the state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

The mission will culminate with the launch and landing of a rover on the moon to collect mineral samples in 2012.

The probe -- Chang'e-1, named after a legendary moon goddess -- launched into space 16 months ago on October 24, 2007.

North Korean Tensions Higher

Why do we never hear about this and things like this, in the local paper?
clipped from news.yahoo.com

NKorea: US must cancel military drill with South

SEOUL, South Korea – Senior North Korean military officials demanded Monday that the U.S. and South Korea call off their annual military drill involving tens of thousands of troops, warning the exercise would exacerbate tensions on the Korean peninsula, according to a news report.

North Korea had called for the hastily arranged talks — the first in nearly seven years — last week, according to the U.N. Command, which monitors a cease-fire that ended the 1950-53 Korean War.

Relations between the two Koreas are at their lowest point in a decade, with North Korea bristling over South Korean President Lee Myung-bak's hard-line policy toward Pyongyang. The tensions have intensified in recent weeks amid reports that North Korea is preparing to test a long-range missile believed capable of reaching U.S. territory.

controversy over world's oldest traces of life

Interesting stuff. Who'd a thought....Greenland?

Controversy Over World’s Oldest Traces Of Life

ScienceDaily (Feb. 28, 2009) — The argument over whether an outcrop of rock in South West Greenland contains the earliest known traces of life on Earth has been reignited, in a study published in the Journal of the Geological Society. The research, led by Martin J. Whitehouse at the Swedish Museum of Natural History, argues that the controversial rocks "cannot host evidence of Earth’s oldest life," reopening the debate over where the oldest traces of life are located.

Crucial to the dating of these traces was analysing the cross-cutting intrusions made by igneous rocks into the outcrop. Whatever is cross-cut must be older than the intruding rocks, so obtaining a date for the intrusive rock was vital. When these were claimed to be at least 3.85 billion years old, it seemed that Akilia did indeed hold evidence of the oldest traces of life on Earth.

Japan to use Foreign Reserves?

I'm no economist, but I found this interesting...
clipped from www.nhk.or.jp

Japan may use foreign reserves to help firms

Japan is considering using some of its foreign reserves to help the Japan Bank for International Cooperation finance Japanese firms operating abroad.

The JBIC has begun assisting Japanese firms abroad in securing funds to cope with difficulties arising from the global financial crisis.

With these firms' demand for cash increasing toward the end of the current fiscal year, it is feared that the JBIC may not have enough cash to help firms abroad.

The government is considering using some of its 98 trillion yen, or about one trillion dollars, in foreign reserves to help firms secure operating funds.

Most of Japan's foreign reserves are used for purchasing US government bonds and other financial products. Using them to finance the government-affiliated bank is very unusual.

Officials say the government will determine the amount and terms of the loan after ascertaining the extent of the corporate need for cash.

Court Upholds Anonymity on the Internet!

Good news for those that believe in Freedom of Speech!

Court Upholds Anonymity On The Internet

Maryland's highest court has ruled in favor of Internet anonymity, saying Web sites involved in defamation suits don't have to reveal the identity of readers who post comments on their site.

The ruling Friday by the Maryland Court of Appeals reversed a lower-court decision and said NewsZap.com, an online forum run by Independent Newspapers Inc., doesn't have to disclose the identities of participants in a 2006 online exchange about the cleanliness of a Dunkin' Donuts shop in Centreville, Md.

The company's attorney argued that disclosing the names would have a "chilling effect'' on the First Amendment right to speak anonymously. Businessman Zebulon Brodie argued that freedom of speech doesn't extend to defamation.
